CURIOSITIES ABOUT SALAD SAUCES

Did you know that salads were a very popular dish in the Roman Empire? In fact, ‘salad’ comes from the Latin word ‘salata’, which refers to a salted herb that Romans used to harvest for their meals.

WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF SALAD SAUCES?

Traditionally, vegetable-based preparations were dressed with salt, oil and vinegar. It is what is commonly called ‘salad dressing’.

This way of dressing salads has been varying based on the particular local tradition. Vinaigrette, for example, soon consolidated as one of the most characteristic dressings for these preparations. It basically included a mix of ground pepper blended with oil and vinegar.

MEDITERRANEAN ROOTS

The different Mediterranean cultures –salad sauces are deeply rooted in this area– started to add various ingredients, such as onion, boiled egg, gherkin as well as aromatic herbs such as dill, basil or peppermint.

SALAD SAUCES WITH A NAME

Salad popularisation, as well as the introduction of all sorts of ingredients and variations, gave way to the proliferation of salad sauces designed to dress salads with their own name. Caesar sauce, for example, is linked to its homonymous Mexican salad –usually attributed to an Italian immigrant.
