CURIOSITIES OF THE COCKTAIL SAUCE

This sauce, very popular in different countries and gastronomic traditions, can have different names depending on the place we are in. There are also different varieties coming from different culinary cultures but, going back to its roots, it is a cold sauce that originated in the United Kingdom.

THE ORIGINAL SAUCE

The original cocktail sauce was deep-rooted in the United Kingdom and later became popular across Europe. It had a natural tomato sauce base to which different flavour enhancers were added: juice, wine, cognac, whisky or Worcestershire sauce.

A PREPARATION WITH KETCHUP AND MAYONNAISE

There are many classic versions of the cocktail sauce –especially in Spain– that replace tomato sauce for ketchup as the base for its preparation. This use is also popular in the United States.

On the other hand, in some Latin American countries, mayonnaise is a common ingredient when preparing this sauce. In countries as Argentina, the mayonnaise proportion is greater than the ketchup’s, which is only used for a note of colour and flavour.
